A hole or a scorch is rebuilt one knot at a time in matched wool, tracing the original design so the mend disappears into the pattern instead of sitting on top of it.
Moths chew wool from the underside, out of sight. We deal with the infestation first, then reweave the thinned and eaten patches back to full, even pile.
Left damp on tile in our humidity, a rug can rot through the foundation until it splits. We gauge how far the damage reaches and rebuild whatever sound structure remains.
A rug can be trimmed shorter or narrower to suit a room, and a worn antique brought back through full restoration — always measured against what the piece is worth.
A handful of small habits carry most of the load. Turn the rug two or three times a year so a single path doesn’t soak up all the wear and one edge doesn’t take all the sun, and set a proper pad beneath it — the pad stops sliding and softens the blow against the hard tile and terrazzo so common in Boynton homes.
And keep it dry: mop up spills quickly and never leave a soaked rug sitting, since our coastal damp turns lingering moisture into rot and mildew. Vacuum with a light hand, too, keeping the beater bar off the fringe — that’s usually where the unraveling begins.
